Fall HVAC Tips for Medicine Hat and Southern Alberta Homeowners

One has to ask: is your furnace up to the task of a Southern Alberta winter? And after last year’s heating bills, did you ever put two and two together as to where all that warm air was going? For that matter, when was it that someone put an eye on your HVAC system?

You are not alone in having such thoughts. We at Marvelous Plumbing & Heating Services (or “Marvelous” as we are called around here) have been putting homes in order for the cold months in Medicine Hat and the rest of Southern Alberta since 2015. Put in a call to (587) 801-5800 and we will tell you what your home requires before the frost sets in.

People are often caught napping by the fall. The days are pleasant enough to make one think there is no rush. Then comes a prairie cold snap and the furnace is put to work for the first time in months, only to reveal some deficiency. A bit of forethought now is the best way to spare yourself the aggravation.

Why do it in the fall?

A winter in this part of the country does not come on easy. You can be out for a mild afternoon in Dunmore or Redcliff and the next thing you know the thermometer is reading well under zero. In the meantime your heating system has been sitting idle for months; dust and the odd problem have been making themselves known in quiet fashion.

It is better to have the furnace put right while you still have the option than to discover too late on the year’s coldest night that it is not ready. That is the kind of predicament we like to see our customers stay clear of.

A few things for the homeowner to do

The weather is turning, so here are some steps to take that do not call for any special equipment:

  • Put in a new filter for the furnace or give the old one a cleaning; make a point of checking it once a month over the winter
  • Make room for the air to circulate by moving the clutter and furniture from around the furnace
  • See if your thermostat is in working order by setting it to heat and making sure you get some
  • Give the vents and registers a vacuuming to keep the dust down
  • Be sure leaves and the like are not clogging the outdoor intake and exhaust
  • New batteries for the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

Such habits will do much to ensure your family is safe and the system is in good shape for the winter.

When to leave it to the pros

There are matters a homeowner is not meant to deal with. This fall when you turn on the heat, observe how the system is acting. If you hear banging or squealing, or if the pilot flame is anything but a steady blue, or if some rooms are not warming up to the thermostat’s dictates, it is time to make a phone call. The same applies if the air has a musty or burnt odour, or if the furnace is cycling more than it ought to and your bills are on the rise for no reason.

Left to their own devices these problems will only become costlier. Our technicians are licensed and experienced and will lay out your options in plain terms when it comes to heating repair.

Your ductwork should not be overlooked

Leaky ducts will sap the efficiency of even the finest furnace. You end up putting money into heating the attic or crawlspace. At Marvelous we have Aeroseal technology for sealing leaks from within. On an older home it is an effective means of conserving the heat you are paying for and making for a more comfortable environment.

We are a local operation with deep roots. An acquisition in 2024 has given us a service history that goes back to 1941, and we have earned our place as one of the most relied upon names in home comfort in the region. With an A+ from the BBB and being named one of the Three Best-rated HVAC firms in Medicine Hat, we are proud of what we put in front of the homes and businesses of the 50 plus towns in Southern Alberta.

Financing can be arranged for the larger jobs. We are here from 7:30am till 8:00pm Monday to Friday. Call (587) 801-5800 to have Marvelous put your mind at ease and have your system in order before the winter makes itself known.
